The best room temperature for sleep and focus is not one number. If the same room has to hold a laptop at 2 p.m. and a bed at 11 p.m., it is being asked to support two different jobs. A Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory analysis of office-work studies found that performance rose as temperatures increased up to 21–22°C, then fell above 23–24°C, with a peak near 22°C [4]. In Fahrenheit, that puts the center of the curve around the low 70s. A 2025 meta-analysis in Building and Environment, covering 30 studies and 1,052 participants, found an optimal office range of roughly 21–25°C, with significant performance loss only above 25°C [5].
So the contradiction is not really a contradiction. The cooler figures are sleep targets. The warmer figures are work targets. If a room is held at a sleep-friendly temperature all afternoon, some people get cold, tense, and nap-prone at the desk.
