A Final Word on Airflow and Temporal: Leave Them for the Enterprises

If you are a freelancer or a small-team owner reading this article, you almost certainly do not need Apache Airflow or Temporal. These tools are designed for enterprise data pipelines and durable execution patterns. Their setup times (10–60 hours) and maintenance requirements (4–15 hours per month) make them far more expensive than n8n or Activepieces for typical workflow automation needs.

Airflow shines when you are orchestrating complex DAGs with dependencies across multiple data sources — think ETL pipelines, machine learning training schedules, and event-driven data processing at scale.
