Do brain training apps improve focus and productivity?

If you are comparing brain training apps for focus and productivity, the first question is not which app has the best streaks, puzzle variety, or dashboard. It is whether getting better at the app’s own drills carries over to the work you actually care about. That carryover is the weak link. A 2014 consensus statement from about 70 researchers warned that commercial brain-training claims were running ahead of the evidence, and a major review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest found little evidence that training on brain games improves everyday cognitive performance in a broad way.[1][2]

The regulatory boundary is just as blunt. In 2016, Lumosity agreed to pay $2 million to settle Federal Trade Commission charges over deceptive advertising for its brain-training program, with a $50 million judgment suspended. The order required stronger evidence for future brain-training claims, including randomized, adequately controlled, blinded testing, and required notice to certain auto-renewal subscribers from 2009 through 2014.[3]

That does not mean every session is pointless. A well-made drill can be absorbing, can replace a worse habit, and can make you faster at the thing it trains. But no consumer app in this comparison has proven that a normal working-age adult who subscribes will become broadly more focused or more productive at work. The useful comparison is narrower: which app trains the skill closest to your real bottleneck, at a price that matches the evidence?

Start with transfer distance, not app polish

Near transfer is when practice helps a closely related task. If an app makes you faster at spotting a target among distractors, it would be near transfer to improve on a similar attention test. Far transfer is the tempting leap: the idea that the same drill will help you stay locked into a spreadsheet, finish an essay, stop rereading Slack, or move through email with less mental friction.

Most marketing lives in that leap. The evidence is more comfortable near the starting line. A 2016 working-memory meta-analysis discussed in WIRED found no convincing far transfer from working-memory training, and Harvard Health’s practical summary reaches the same everyday conclusion: training can help the practiced task, but evidence is much weaker for improving overall cognition.[4][5]

Dose also matters. The casual five-minute session is not the same thing as the training intensity used in some studies. Mayo Clinic notes that one cited study used one hour per day, five days per week, for eight to ten weeks, and that gains may fade when training stops.[6] That is a very different commitment from opening an app between meetings.

So the grades below are not app-store quality grades. They judge evidence proximity: how close the trained activity is to a plausible focus or productivity goal, and how much of the support comes from independent, transferable research rather than brand language.

How the apps land

BrainHQ: the strongest evidence trail, with the most important limitation

BrainHQ gets the most respect in this comparison because its evidence trail is tied to speed-of-processing training and the ACTIVE trial lineage. The strongest commonly cited result is not a productivity result: in follow-up work associated with ACTIVE, speed-of-processing training in roughly 2,800 older adults was linked with about a 29% lower 10-year dementia risk.[8][9]

That is meaningful, but it has to stay in its lane. Older-adult processing-speed and dementia-risk evidence does not prove that BrainHQ makes a healthy working-age adult more effective at drafting strategy documents, debugging code, or studying for finals. If your real goal is processing speed and you are comfortable paying more for the app with the strongest research association here, BrainHQ is the evidence-first pick. If your goal is a broad productivity lift, the evidence does not travel that far.

Elevate: better judged as skill practice than brain training

Elevate is easiest to defend when you stop treating it as a general brain enhancer. Its drills are closer to recognizable work and school tasks: vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, and mental math. If you want to become quicker at a sentence-level language task, a grammar drill is at least pointed in the right direction.

The evidence still needs caution. A reported “69% better writing/grammar” figure comes from a 2021 company-funded internal study, not an independent demonstration that Elevate improves workplace productivity or general focus.[9] That makes Elevate a practical-skills pick, not an evidence leader. It is the app I would be more patient with for “I want short language and math drills that resemble tasks I actually do” than for “I want a better brain.”

Peak: interesting because of Decoder, easy to overstate

Peak’s best evidence-adjacent card is Decoder. In a University of Cambridge study published in January 2019, 75 healthy young adults completed eight one-hour sessions over a month. Participants improved significantly on the CANTAB Rapid Visual Information Processing attention test, and the effects were described as comparable to those seen with methylphenidate or nicotine. Decoder was licensed into Peak, and the study author disclosed consulting for Peak.[10]

That is more concrete than the usual “scientifically designed” copy. It is also not proof that Peak improves your workday. The study used a lab setting, a specific attention measure, healthy young adults, and a disclosed commercial relationship. If your bottleneck is sustained attention and you want the app with the clearest attention-specific signal, Peak is worth considering. If you want measured gains in writing output, meeting focus, task completion, or study productivity, Decoder does not establish that.

Lumosity: familiar, polished, and permanently shaped by the FTC case

Lumosity is still one of the names many people know first, and it may be perfectly enjoyable as a daily puzzle habit. But the FTC settlement is not a footnote when the purchase reason is focus and productivity. The case was specifically about advertising claims for a brain-training program, and the settlement set a high bar for future claims: randomized, adequately controlled, blinded evidence.[3]

Post-FTC research does not erase the transfer problem. The 2026 sources cited below note, for example, that a 2020 PNAS 10-week training study had small effect sizes and a questioned control group.[9] That is not a reason to mock someone who likes Lumosity. It is a reason not to rank it highly if the buyer is paying for proven work-focus transfer.

NeuroNation: reasonable as a routine, weaker as a proof-based productivity buy

NeuroNation’s price sits below Lumosity and BrainHQ in the cited 2026 ranges, which makes it easier to tolerate if what you want is a structured habit rather than a high-confidence intervention.[8][9] The problem is evidentiary, not aesthetic: the research cited for this comparison does not establish a stronger working-age focus or productivity transfer case than the higher-ranked options.

That places NeuroNation in the “use it if you like the routine” tier. It can be a better evening choice than another half hour of low-grade scrolling. It should not be sold to yourself as the evidence-backed route to a sharper workday.

CogniFit: the price asks for more evidence than the category can give

CogniFit is the most expensive app in the cited price ranges, at roughly $120 per year or about $20 to $30 per month.[8][9] A higher price is not automatically a problem; people pay for structure, reporting, and interface all the time. But when the goal is focus and productivity transfer, a higher price should buy a stronger answer to the transfer question.

On the evidence available here, it does not. CogniFit may appeal if you like a more assessment-oriented feel and are not making the purchase mainly on proven productivity gains. If you are choosing one subscription because you want the best-supported focus improvement, it is hard to justify paying the premium first.

The actual pick

  • Choose BrainHQ if you want the strongest research association in this group and you understand that the best-known results are about older adults and processing speed, not a proven working-age productivity upgrade.
  • Choose Elevate if your goal is directly usable language, reading, writing, or math practice. It is the most sensible “closest drill to the task” choice, even though it is not the strongest scientific evidence choice.
  • Consider Peak if the Decoder-linked attention angle is exactly what you want, and you are comfortable with the lab-setting, licensing, and consulting-disclosure caveats.
  • Downgrade Lumosity, NeuroNation, and CogniFit if your main reason for paying is proven focus or productivity transfer rather than enjoyment, routine, or app preference.

If the problem is bigger than practice friction—sleep debt, ADHD-like task initiation problems, poor work setup, or a schedule that never leaves room for deep work—a brain-game subscription is a small tool aimed at the wrong layer. Buy the closest drill if you will actually use it. Do not buy any of these apps believing a subscription has proven it can turn a normal working-age adult into a broadly more focused worker.
