If you truly worry about losing the processing benefit of handwriting, the strongest approach is a hybrid workflow. Capture live lecture notes by hand – on paper or with a stylus on a 2‑in‑1 – to force slower, more deliberate processing. Then, within 24 hours, type or scan those notes into a digital system for search, synthesis, and review.

This gives you both: the initial cognitive engagement of handwriting plus the digital advantages of backlinking, tagging, and easy recall. It directly addresses the Flanigan finding that the review step is where the handwriting advantage resides. By digitising, you set yourself up for an effective review process.

Review protocols that make any notes stick

The evidence is consistent: the review phase determines recall more than the capture phase. Commit to three habits.
